Knowledge with dignity

Silence and misinformation leave girls unprepared for growing up. Surveys of girls’ schools in Pakistan have found that many girls miss class during their periods and know little about what is happening to their bodies. The cause is rarely illness. It is embarrassment, misinformation and a lack of simple facilities. Growing Up Well is the companion track to Safe and Strong: clear, respectful lessons on puberty and menstrual health, in a school that supports girls with the facilities they need.

What girls learn, by age

  • Classes 1–3: everyday hygiene habits only.
  • Classes 4–5: session 1, Growing up (body and emotional changes, normal variation, bathing and clean clothes), and session 2, Understanding periods (what a period is and why it happens, and that it is healthy, not shameful).
  • Older girls (later): managing a period at school and at home, feeling well and when to see a doctor, and Islamic guidance on prayer, fasting and ghusl, explained by a female scholar.

Who leads, and who checks

Sessions are led by a female teacher. A female doctor or health worker reviews all medical content before it is used, and a female scholar reviews the faith content. Mothers are invited to an orientation before the lessons begin, and to a session during the course.

The school has to work for girls too

A course only helps if the school supports it. Before launch we check, and fix where needed:

  • Private toilets with water, soap and a covered bin.
  • An emergency supply of pads held by a trusted female staff member, given without questions or charge.
  • A quiet place to rest, and a spare uniform.
  • A no-teasing rule and a simple rest and absence policy.

Boys learn too: a short companion session teaches that menstruation is natural and never a reason to tease.

Working with families

Guardian consent is required for every girl, with a simple opt-out, and any girl may sit out an activity. Nothing a girl shares is passed on, and children are never asked about private health matters on a website form.

All health content is reviewed by a female doctor or health worker before it is used. Please do not share private health information through the website form.
